Getting Your Air Conditioner Ready For Summer

Summer is just around the corner and any day now we’ll all be switching on our air conditioner. But is your air conditioner ready for summer? We’re all getting our health and bodies ready for summer, but the most important thing to get ready is your air conditioner! And no, we do not mean just changing the batteries in the remote. To ensure your air conditioner is ready for the Aussie summer heat, you will need to have it serviced.

Before you do turn it on, ask yourself this, when was the last time I serviced my air conditioner?
If you had to pause, say uhhh or remembered it was over a year ago, then it’s time to service your air conditioner before the heat hits.

1. Boost indoor air quality

A clean and unblocked filter will ensure you and your family are only breathing in pure, filtered air with no dust, dirt or pollution. Regularly replacing or cleaning your filter will ensure normal airflow, optimal efficiently, and lower energy consumption by 5% – 15%.

2. Save on power and repair bills

Running a broken unit will require more power and as a result… higher bills! Repairs can be quite costly, however having routinely service will assist avoiding these excess repairs. If there are repairs that are required, fixing them as soon as it happens will prevent any permanent damage. A perfectly working unit, with regular services means your air conditioner performing at it’s peak and efficiently.

3. Maintain the efficiency and lengthen the lifespan of your air conditioner

Each year your air conditioner does not get serviced it will lose 5% of its overall efficiency. As the years go on and the efficiency drops, the air conditioner’s lifespan will also decreases because it’s unable to operate at optimal performance. Therefor it is vital to regularly service your air conditioner in order for it to run at optimal capacity and to prolong its lifespan for as long as possible.

4. Protect the environment

Operating an air conditioner without regularly servicing it not only hurts your wallet and air quality, but also the environment. When you service your air conditioner the technician will perform tests to locate any leaks (HFCs/man-made greenhouse gases). These leaks are very harmful to the environment as it will contribute to global warming.

5. Prevent the Foul smelling odours

If you don’t regularly service your heater and perform a chemical wash, it will result in a build-up of mould, bacteria, or other organism which will begin emitting foul smelling odours. Regular maintenance and servicing will avoid this and ensure you have nice, fresh, odourless air

Woodpecker recommends to perform annual services on your air conditioner. An ideal time to service your air conditioner is just before summer hits, as the unit has been idle all throughout winter. Beat the summer heat, before it beats you!

Best Wood To Burn In Your Wood Heater

You just bought a stunning new wood heater that will keep you toasty warm all winter. It’s time to throw in some wood and get a nice roaring fire going. But what is the best wood for a nice fire? Any random wood? Absolutely not!

Sure any type of wood will start a fire for you. However, will you get a good, long lasting fire? No.

Woodpecker strongly recommends burning only hardwoods as the best wood for a strong, vibrant fire. Hardwood will burn slower and it’s also double the density of softwoods (lower densities results in a faster burn).

It’s most important to ensure the wood is dried before it’s burned. Fresh wood contains a higher amount of water and will use a substantial amount of energy when burning to remove the water from the log, which will create steam during the burn.

To ensure optimal burns, the best wood Woodpecker recommends are woods with a moisture content of 15% or less, and has been seasoned for at least a year.

Best way to check the moisture content in your wood?

The answer is simple, invest in a moisture meter! Below are great examples of a moisture meter being used on greenfire wood logs.
As the images show, the moisture content in these greenfire wood have a very high moisture content. This means the wood will not give you a good burn!

If you do regularly burn wood with a moisture content higher than 15%, as the wood burns the moisture in the wood will boil as steam. This steam not only cools the fire but causes some of the combustible gases emitted from the heated wood to condense, resulting in small particles that we see as smoke. This smoke not only creates smoke pollution, but is wasted heat as the energy goes up the chimney rather than heating your room.

These combustible wood gases can also condense as creosote in the flue or chimney. Build up of creosote can possibly ignite causing chimney fires, and also reduce the efficiency of your heater.

The best wood Woodpecker recommends Woodpecker recommends burning Red Gum wood in your heater for the most optimal burns, and suggests avoiding softwoods with high moisture content such as tea tree, pine wood and greenfire.

Know Your Heater, Know Your Safety

Winter is upon us and everybody will be turning towards their heaters. In light of recent safety news of potential carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning produced by B-Vent/Open Flue gas heaters such as Vulcan Heritage Space Heater and Pyrox Heritage Space Heater, it’s vital to test your gas heaters in your home/rental property.

What’s going on exactly?

Few Victorians have been reported to have experienced carbon monoxide poisoning which symptoms include tiredness, shortness of breath, headaches, dizziness, nausea and others. This was caused due to the use of B-vent/Open Flue gas heaters such as a Vulcan or Pyrox Heritage Gas Space Heater where air is drawn front he room to feed the fire. This paired with inadequate ventilation and even use of exhaust fans will draw the carbon monoxide back in to the room which leads to people being exposed to potential carbon monoxide poisoning.

The diagram below illustrates how air is drawn in and out of a B-Vent/Open-Flue gas heaters, compared to a Balanced Flue gas heater.

Do you use a Vulcan or Pyrox Heritage Space Heater? It’s urged by Energy Save Victoria that those using Vulcan or Pyrox Heritage Gas Heater to stop using them until they’ve been tested by a qualified gas fitter.

The department of Health and Human Services is inspecting these gases in public housing properties. Properties with heaters that fail this inspection will have their heaters disconnected and replaced, while heaters that pass the carbon monoxide testing will go on a priority list for replacement.

In the meantime, if you own one of these heaters then it is recommended that you don’t use it until it can be tested by a qualified gas fitter.

Stay warm this winter by using alternative heating until this has been tested or replaced with the following options

If you want to stay with a gas heater then we recommend choosing a Balance Flue gas heater. Balanced Flue gas heaters are great alternatives as it draws air from outside the house to feed the fire. As the heater is sealed, the exhaust gases are drawn up the flue and dispersed safely outside the house. There are great Balanced Flue gas heaters available at Woodpecker.

Can’t decide which is best for your home? Check out our product range on our website or contact us and we will help choose the perfect fit for your family and home.

Preventative maintenance

Whole home comfort is what any family tries to achieve, a good general service to tweak your heating system will ensure your family enjoy comfort indoors this winter – and each one thereafter. Firing up your heating system before or after a season is just like servicing your car. A years workout, or even a system lying dormant over the months it’s not needed, requires a good spring clean, this prevents unforeseen problems and the stressful impact of living without your heating system due to a major fault and the costly bill associated with lack of maintenance.

Efficiency is a good thing, and modern day household appliances have more electrics and moving parts to ensure they release the least amount of carbon and keep the Ozone with as little damage as possible, however this requires upkeep to achieve peak performance and a longer life of your wood heater, gas log fire, split system, hot water service or hydronic heating system. Preventative maintenance is like a hair cut, mowing the lawn, a good spring clean, a dental check up, or clipping toe nails; it can divert unexpected breakdowns and minor problems can be detected early without the need to replace the entire unit.

Probably the single most important reason for regular servicing (aside from your families safety) is that manufacturers stipulate in their manuals that a product must be serviced regularly (usually not exceeding two years) otherwise the warranty terms and conditions are voided. A service can not be carried out by yourself, a mate or Jack of all trades. A licensed tradie is licensed for a very specific reason, he is qualified in his trade, he knows what he is doing, he knows the products he’s servicing and installing, he knows the building regulations and standards, and will guarantee his work, costing you less in the long run and keeping your mind at ease…

It just so happens that Woodpecker is a one stop shop for all your home comfort needs, not only can we advise you on your purchase, we can supply you with your unit, arrange the installation and also service your product. Call us today to schedule an appointment.

Are You Summer Ready?

There are a variety of solutions available to keep your home cool this summer.
Summer Airconditioning
The first thing you need to establish is – Do you want to be cool or cold?

There are two main forms of cooling that you should consider;

1. Evaporative Cooling
2. Refrigerated Cooling

Evaporative cooling

Evaporative cooling is a system that uses fresh air. The Evaporative cooling system is roof mounted and pulls fresh air from outside through chill cell pads that are mounted on each side of the unit. Water runs through these pads and as the air is pulled through these pads the Evaporative system turns fresh air into vapour with a drop in temperature by approx. 15C – This cool air is then delivered through a variety of ducts throughout your home.

Evaporative cooling is run by having your doors and windows open, pushing the hot air inside your home out through these areas and creating a pressure so the warm air outside cannot get back in.
Evaporative cooling is perfect if you don’t like the feel of refrigerated air or if you have kids – You won’t need to keep telling them to keep the doors closed when they run in and out from playing outside.

Refrigerated air is air that is recycled within in your home – Don’t worry, all of our refrigerated systems have filters and our premium Daikin systems are even accredited by the national athsma council. These systems will deliver crisp, cold air into your home through an indoor coil which is piped up to an external condensing unit.

Many of our refrigerated systems also come with “Reverse Cycle” functionality which will deliver cool or warm air. These systems are perfect if you are after a complete climate solution.

Again, our Woodpecker Consultants are experts in choosing the right system for your home – Give us a call or even bring your floor plans in and we will design a system based on your needs.

Either which way you decide to go both our refrigerated and evaporative cooling systems will ensure you don’t sweat through another hot summer and get that much needed sleep at night so you feel refreshed and ready to take on the next day!

A Woodpecker Consultant can help you with choosing the right unit – Just give us a call at Oakleigh East on 95588666 or Mornington on 59770899 to speak with one of our friendly consultants.

How to Choose Between a Wood, Gas, Pellet or Electric Fireplace

The Main Purpose
The first decision you must make is, what is the main purpose and use of your fireplace? Are you intending for it to be a primary heating source for a common room, such as a living area or outdoor entertaining space? Or are you intending for the fireplace to be a beautiful addition for your home’s aesthetic? Or is your fireplace designed for cooking, such as a grill or pizza oven? Understanding exactly what you require is the first step to finding the right fireplace.

Wood, Gas, Pellet or Electric?
Different types of fireplaces utilise different types of fuel or power.

Wood Heaters

Enclosed freestanding wood heater
Wood heaters are fuelled by wood and give you a feeling of core heat with the ability to heat from 2 to 35 building squares.

Some wood heaters are purely radiant models, and so will radiate the heat out at a steady rate and others have a fan to push the heat out faster. Fireboxes come in a variety of sizes, depending on the area you wish to heat or whether it will be your main heating source.

A good quality wood heater used efficiently and well maintained, can last around 20-30 years. With advances in technology, they are now not only more efficient than ever, but also more stylish in design.

The best wood heater for you depends on your situation, requirements and preferences. They come in both freestanding and inbuilt options. An inbuilt unit can be for an existing fireplace (making it more efficient and cheaper) or for a new construction (zero clearance box). You can also get double-sided heaters

Gas fireplaces

gas fireplace zero clearance
Gas Fireplaces are a ‘mess-free’ option that not only heat but also obtain the visual ambience of a wood-burning fire. The effect and heat is almost instant, with the ability to heat from 2-14 building squares. If you have a heater with a high heating output and low mega joule consumption, the unit will be efficient to run. Some gas fireplaces even have ducting so that you can easily heat the other rooms in the home.

It’s important to understand that gas fireplaces are used as a secondary heat source with another form as a back up, but many are designed to at least heat individual rooms. In essence, gas fireplaces can create a focal point in any room, as well as providing warmth. Even if you have other heating like central heating, a gas fireplace can be used to complement this heating source.

There are primarily two different types of gas fires – open gas and glass fronted – and both are available in freestanding, inbuilt and double-sided varieties.

Electric fireplaces

Electric fireplace

Electric Fireplaces mimic a fireplace burning coals, wood or pebbles and are primarily used for decorative purposes, not heating.

The benefit of these fireplaces is that they require no flueing and can be floor standing or wall mounted. They are great in units or townhouses where sharing walls, body corporate or other issues make flueing a difficult option.

Pellet fireplaces

Pellet fireplaces can reduce heating bills and because they use renewable fuels, they have a low impact on the environment.

Derived from the milling of plantation timber, pellets are the cleanest-burning biomass fuel available. Featuring simple technology, these freestanding stoves are easy to operate and maintain and provide clean and efficient heat

Open or Enclosed

An open fireplace (available in wood or gas) is more visual, with some supplementary heating. There is flexibility in terms of sizes and style; however the running costs are greater for both wood and gas burning fireplaces. A glass fronted fire is generally a lot more efficient and effective, with a higher heat output and lower running costs. Another benefit is safety, as there is no exposed flame.

Inbuilt or Freestanding

An inbuilt fireplace is built into a wall in your home, whether it be an existing chimney or purpose built wall. A freestanding fireplace either stands on its own, either near a wall or in the middle of a room.

The main difference between the two varieties (beyond their visual appearance) is the cost for installation. Adding an inbuilt fireplace to your home will generally cost more than a freestanding fireplace as the existing area must be prepared and finished in accordance with the home’s existing décor.

Making sure your wood heater is installed correctly

Wood heaters have been warming peoples homes for centuries. The most common form are slow combustion heaters, which are more efficient and easier to operate. Most people spend weeks, sometimes even months choosing the right wood heater for their home. Sadly, when it comes to installing the unit however, it is common for people to choose the “cheapest price”. More often than not, this leads to incorrect and non-compliant wood heater installations.
Wood Heaters
The most common misconception we have found amongst most wood heater retailers is that a 3.6m flue kit is “standard” and is enough for the heater to comply. Don’t be caught out! All wood heater installations are regulated by Australian Standard AS/NZS2918 and must comply with Australian Standard AS/NZS 2918:2001. This stipulates that the minimum flue height must be 4.6m above the floor on which the wood heater is located. Therefore, unless the wood heater itself is over a 1000mm high, 3.6m of flue will make the installation of the wood heater non-compliant.

Wood Heater install

The standard also states that there must be a three meter clearance all the way around the cowl (end of the flue pipe). If the cowl is less than three meters away from any trees, windows, double storey walls, neighbours wall, etc, than the it must pass the object by a meter.

Wood Heater flue install

Not only is Standard AS/NZS 2918:2001 a legal requirement for installing wood heaters in Australia, but is also aids in the functionality of the fireplace by preventing expelled smoke coming back down the flue and into your home.

Dr.Luis & Mrs Sylvia

From the moment that we walked into your showroom in Oakleigh we were cared for in a highly professional and friendly manner by Aaron and then Steve who were very reassuring and thorough in going through everything with us. Ken then contacted us very promptly and told us exactly who was coming and at what times. We also found him to be very friendly and helpful when we rang with a couple of queries. John and Aaron installed the fireplace very efficiently and were very impressive in their good natured approach to their work and the efficient way that they went about everything. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them. Scott the plasterer was also a pleasure to deal with and I would certainly recommend him to anyone needing this service. When we returned to the showroom a couple of times to pay and to check things out we were met by the very friendly young Marianne who showed a very thorough knowledge of the product and was very helpful indeed. We would have no hesitation in recommending your company to anyone who was interested in installing a fireplace and are delighted with ours.
